Moving your StrataBugs database to a different location

Last updated: 12 June 2006

When you install StrataBugs for Windows, the default location for the database file is the same location as the StrataBugs program files. It it sometimes necessary to change the location of the database file to enable it to be included in routine backup operations. This is a quick guide to how to do this.

Step 1 - locate your database file and move it to your selected location

Find the file called SBUGS.MDB. You will find this in the folder C:\Program Files\SBUGS1-8. Depending on the Windows Explorer display settings, you may not see the ".MDB" file type, but you may see the SBUGS file marked with a "Key" icon (for an Access database). The file will be at least 2Mb in size, and probably much more. Right-click, and "Cut" this file. Go to the destination location, for instance "My Documents\Sbugs", and select "Paste". You should now have a copy of the file in this folder.

Step 2 - Set your Windows settings to point to the new location

Open the Windows Control Panel, using Start | Control Panel. Depending on whether you're using the "Category view" or "Classic view", select "Performance and Maintenance" first, then "Administrative Tools":

Select "Data Sources (ODBC)". Click on the "System DSN" tab:

Click "Configure...", and select the new location of your SBUGS.MDB file:

Press OK to close, and OK again to close the ODBC administrator.

You should now be able to restart StrataBugs.
