Sharing data

StrataBugs has a number of inbuilt applications which enable you to transfer data between users. In addition, there are a number of other ways of sharing data and interpretations. These facilities allow biostratigraphic data to be full integrated into geological interpretations.

CSV Import You can import data from spreadsheets as ASCII Comma Separated Value files. These files are exported by programs such as Ragware, Tilia and Excel. ODP data is now available on the WWW in spreadsheet format and can readily be imported into StrataBugs with some minor editing. Click here for an example.

CSV Export You can export interpretations (Chronostratigraphy, Lithostratigraphy, Biozones, etc) as well as fossil distributional data from StrataBugs using the CSV Export application to programs such as Ragware and Excel.

Another example of a biostratigraphy program which accepts CSV files is ZoneCor. CSV files can also be imported into a number of sequence stratigraphic and geophysical interpretion packages (eg StratWorks). Data exported in this way can be directly incorporated as "logs" in TWT and overlain on seismic sections.

IPS You can export data as a CSV file for data transfer to IPS (Integrated Paleontological System) from TACS.

RASC Data files for use with Ranking and Scaling (RASC) can be created and exported from the Event manager application in StrataBugs. For more information on the availability of RASC contact StrataData.

GraphCor Data files for use with the graphic correlation program GraphCor can be created and exported from the Event manager application in StrataBugs. For more information on the availability of GraphCor contact StrataData.

Correspondence Analysis Data can also be exported from the Index application in Cornell Condensed format for use in correspondence analysis programs such as Decorana.

DEX is a new international standard data exchange format for biostratigraphy. This format will enable biostratigraphers to exchange data more readily with each other for use in a variety of applications and to prepare files for use in IPS applications. For more information on DEX contact StrataData or join the DEX listserver. The body of your first message to the listserver should be - subscribe dex name - where name is your name.

Save Charts as... From within the chart plotting application you may save a chart in .WMF (=Windows Meta File) format. This is the standard means of transferring graphics between Windows based applications. Charts saved in this way can be imported into a DTP (=Desk Top Publisher) such as Coreldraw!, PagePlus or Arts and Letters for annotation or editing. Simple annotations can be made very efficiently using the drawing facilities in Excel or PowerPoint.
