StrataBugs User Accounts (Person: Add/Edit dialogs)
You must have a StrataBugs account set up in order to log in to StrataBugs and record data.
This dialog enables you to add or edit details and privileges of people who use your installation of StrataBugs, or supply data from other StrataBugs installations (and other data sources) which you import into your StrataBugs database. You can open this dialog from the Personnel dialog, which is accessible from the Control Panel (Config | Personnel).
Enter the user's details:
Full name
-
StrataBugs ID - the analyst identity used in StrataBugs. Limited to 5 characters. We suggest using the person's initials (usually 3 characters). This ID is linked to analysed samples and is exported in and SBG and DEX files; therefore the analyst will be known by this ID in their own and also in other organisations. The ID is more likely to be unique if it uses more letters!
-
StrataBugs password - will be required at login. Not required for non-users. (Also see System name below). Passwords are not case-sensitive.
-
Default discipline (selection available from a drop-down list) - the default discipline will be pre-selected on dialogs, making data entry easier. If you check the Restrict to add/edit data within discipline only box, the user may only work on analyses within their own discipline. Note that 'restricted users' still have full use of other data types, e.g. interpretations and taxon dictionary.
Chart colour - colour of the user's data plotted within the biostratigraphy chart panels. Select using ellipsis (...) button.
-
Privileges - there are five user privilege settings, starting from the most privileged:
- Super user: can edit the details of all other users and super users, and change certain system-wide preferences. In a shared database, usually only the database administrator should be a super user. For personal / single user databases you can use this setting.
- Key User: As user, but can set restrictions on data items to which they have access (e.g. schemes and chart templates). See the Permissions dialog for more information about restrictions.
- User: has full use of StrataBugs but cannot add, delete or edit the details of other users. Users can add, edit or delete non-users.
- Read only: or 'browsing' cannot add or edit data, but they can view data and save personal preferences.
- Non user: cannot log into the system, but can be an analyst of recorded data (see Select Analyst dialog for details). You may add non-users as part of a the analyst matching process when you import data.
-
System name - if you connect to your database with your own user ID (rather than a generic user ID which is shared between StrataBugs users), you can enter it here. If, when you log into StrataBugs, the database connection using this ID is successful, you will not need to complete the StrataBugs login step. You do not need to enter a StrataBugs password if you enter a system name, but note that if you choose to leave the password field blank, you will only be able to log into StrataBugs if you are connected to your database using this system name.
The ID may be a name/code allocated by the system administrator.
