Species Sub-types

You can record occurrences of sub-divisions of a species in your database. For example, you may wish to distinguish between adult and juvenile forms of the same species, or between complete and incomplete specimens. You can create as many of these species sub-types as you need.

Occurrences of differrent sub-types are recorded with separate counts:

In biostratigraphy chart panels, the different sub-types are aggregrated into a single column. You can, however, separate them by setting the 'sub-grouping' option to 'sub type':

Here the second inner panel has sub-grouping set to 'sub-type'. The historgam is subdivided into different colour segments, which are shown in the key. The total count for the taxon is still 5.

To record occurrences with a sub-type, select a type from the drop-down list at the bottom-right of the picklist. Press the "..." button next to this drop-down to see the Species Sub-Types dialog.

Note that you cannnot delete any sub-types that have been used in the database unless all the occurrences referring to this type have been deleted.

Press Info to show how many occurrence records in the database are marked with the selected sub-type.

You can also edit the sub-type of an existing occurrence from the Occurrence dialog.
