Charts: Where to Start
This is a brief overview which links you to other pages describing concepts and processes in more detail.
Essential concepts
If you are familiar with the v2.0 and older StrataBugs Charts program, your first step should be to forget everything you know about charts and templates! If you are new to StrataBugs, learn about the anatomy of a chart.
You need to be familiarise yourself with the concept of dynamic templates. These are elements of charts which can be reused in different situations, generally within one project. Think about creating a set of templates which belong with a set of wells.
Where do charts fit into your workflow? The Charts module is designed around your charts developing alongside your data. You should think about charts from the project outset - not just at the end. The charts are an interactive tool for interpreting data, as well as displaying the 'finished product'.
The Charts module is for designing chart templates and for creating multi-well charts. Other modules use the charts you have designed to interact with data.
Use the "Standard" chart tab
Samples & Interpreations Charts tab includes an "Untemplated" chart tab:
- This chart is always created automatically at the start of your session, and will display all the data in your section.
- You can add, remove and rearrange the panels and set all other chart properties via the main Chart Properties dialog.
- You can print or save an image of the chart via the File menu.
- Right-click on a panel to change its properties.
The "advanced" features allow you to use this chart as a template design tool:
- Save your updated panels as new panel templates.
- "Load" a block template into the untemplated tab, where you can make temporary changes whilst looking at actual data.
- "Save" the untemplated tab as a block template.
Create a well block template
(Find detail on block templates here).
- Open the Charts module and choose File | New Block Template | Well Block.
- Drag and drop panel template from the tree on the top-right of the screen.
- Add new panel templates where necessary. Edit template properties in the table at the bottom-right of the screen.
- Save your block template (unlike edits to data, your charts are not saved until you save them!).
- Open your well(s) in Samples & Interpretations module. On the Charts tab, open your block template. This "chart" is interactive, and its settings are saved for next time you open the well. You do not need to create a chart for each well in the project.
Combine block templates in a chart
(Detail on building charts can be found here).
- In the Charts module choose File | New Chart.
- Drag and drop block template from the tree onto the chart. Choose a well to apply to the block.
- Click on a block to select it.
- Edit the block's properties by clicking in the table in the bottom-right of the screen.
- Edit the chart properties from the button on the toolbar (includes chart header and key).
Add Correlation templates
(Learn about correlation templates here).
- Drag and drop a standard correlation template from the tree onto your chart.
- Click between chart blocks to see the list of applied correlations. Click on an item in the list to show its properties in the table.
- Right-Click on an applied standard correlation to create a correlation template from it. You can edit this template to remove some of the lines.
- Add your correlation template to the chart. In its properties, select a line to be the chart datum.
